Holme Moss Fell Race 19 July 2015

Having acquired a strange and mysterious leg injury out 'over-recceing' Holme Moss route this week, I found myself in the marvellous situation of being able to simply report on the race!

The start - Helen Berry was the only runner going through the puddles.

Jean Shotter took a couple of inventive little movies at this point (is she starting to be a fell race reporter I wonder - yes let's hope so) Jean's BAFTA winning recordings are on our twitter feed. Give me a shout if you cant find them (linking to them has foxed me).

Matt Lalor and Tim Budd appeared from the direction of Holme Moss together, leaving just the down and up of Ramsden Clough and then the flat track and killer road section to fight it out for the win. Matt obviously had a bit left in the tank as he took the win by over a minute.

Mark Ollerenshaw was a little way behind them and perhaps the welcome drink of water provided by Holmfirth Harriers at the top of Ramsden Clough, gave him enough to push on to keep 3rd place.

Helen Berry stormed to finish almost first vet overall, but certainly 6th breaking the 3 hour mark and setting a new PB on 'holme' territory of 2:56:57. She was very pleased with this result and certainly very pleased with her prize - a holiday at Pyrenees Haven and a pair of socks.

Tom Addison to stand for PM

We've just heard some breaking news that English Champion 2014 Tom Addison is to stand in the coming general election on Thursday 7 May.

We understand that Tom's achievements of recent years in our sport, have earned him the attention of his local MP and President of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron.

Tim Farron is a keen fellrunner himself and we asked him to explain to us which of Tom's many great attributes made him so right for the job; whether it be his achievement of becoming English Champion 2014, winner of the classics Kentmere, Coniston and Pendle races last year or the sheer resilience under pressure and commitment to training. 

Tim replied "I've told you before, please leave me alone"

We asked Tom how we would manage to juggle his training with running the country. Tom commented "If you don't stop pestering me I will call the police".

The World Federation of Fell Running refused to comment.

Transvulcania 2014

La Palma (South is top left and North on the right)

While we're here preparing to tackle the Fred Whitton, or a leg of the Calderdale Way Relay, Kim Collison and loads of other Brits are going to run an island, La Palma in the Canary Islands off the African Coast.

The race website (http://www.transvulcania.net/) describes it as "a mountain race that crosses the island of La Palma through two long route mountain tracks with the start line [in the South] and the finish line [in the West]."

The distance is 73.3km (which is about 45 miles) with 4000 m of climb (14,500 feet) and it starts on Saturday May 10 at 6:00 am.

Real running journalists would describe the race as 'stacked' (see Ian Corless's article here). And you can follow the progress of competitors here.

Fellrunning's own Kim Collison will be there too, and after a joint win of The Fellsman just two weeks ago, he'll be perfectly acclimatised for the tropical conditions of racing off the African coast!

The Three Peaks 2013

It was snowing whilst the runners were on Penyghent, but after that it was just cold and breezy.
Joe Symonds tried to run away from the field, but his Salomon teammate Tofol and Carl Bell went with him. He'd certainly dropped them by Ingleborough as he was a clear five minutes ahead. But I don't think it was a lonely run for Joe as the supporting crowds were shouting encouragement to him, recognising him from winning last year and as the son of Hugh Symonds of Kendal Athletic Club, who won in 1984, 1985 and 1987. Joe improved on last year's time by about a minute (when he ran 2:55:58.)

The FRB team were giving out free Jelly Babies on a first come, first served basis and we took the following photographs before the last rise up Ingleborough.

Black Combe - 2 March 2013

A great start to the new season

It feels like Spring is just around the corner, a few lambs in the fields, daffodils opening up and parking in the field at Silecroft for the Black Combe fell race.

The good weather attracted some excellent talent in both the men's and the ladies' races, with good running conditions likely, the feeling amongst the runners was that this race was going to be enjoyable, it was great to be back together again with a good season of fell running ahead.

A clear win for West Cumbria's favourite fireman Ricky Lightfoot.

Helen Fines won the ladies race (despite forgetting to use her dibber!), with Lizzie Adams second and Anna Lupton third. Helen's watch said she ran in about 1:23. I'm sure we can take Helen's word for it that she didn't just stroll the 100 metres from check point 2 to check point 6, sit down and read her book in the mist, waiting for Lizzie and Anna to arrive and then race them down the fell!

Nic goes down a treat

A new downhill record for race to the finish from the last checkpoint on Black Combe (about 600 metres over more or less 2 km) was set by a speedy young Pennine Fell Runner and 11th man on the day Nic Barber. He descended in about 8 minutes (Nic will confirm with us shortly). Nic's not only good at downhill running, he's pretty good at downing a pint too and can do it in 4.1 seconds. Why not challenge him next time you see him in a pub.

Weasdale Horseshoe 2012 - English Championships

It was a great fell race preceded by and finished with a very tough cross county race.

But when the cross country race finished and the fell race started, Mercia's Simon Bailey broke away and started to build a big gap. "Simon Bailey ran away and left us 'cos we we weren't good enough to keep up!" said one of the top five finishers.
